StatsCan claimed recently that violent crime had decreased in 2024 from 2023. Don’t be fooled. Violent crime actually increased in 2024!
The truth is that in 2024, the number of violent crimes increased by 2%, from 577,920 to 591,856, continuing a long sad trend. Violent crime has almost doubled since 2015, when the Trudeau Liberals came to power, from 382,000 incidents to 592,000 in 2024. StatsCan reports hide the reality that violent crime has kept increasing since 2015.
Ottawa doesn’t care.
Like the Trudeau Liberals, the Carney Liberals play “catch and release” with violent offenders. Ottawa refuses to keep violent thugs in jail but continues to crack down on law-abiding firearms owners. Of course, the Liberals promise to do something about criminal violence, sometime soon. But Liberal promises do nothing for public safety.
How can StatsCan claim an increase is really a decrease?
StatsCan claims that crime rates have decreased by 1% in 2024, but the actual number of crimes increased by 2% since 2023. Rates can be deceiving.
StatsCan’s claims take advantage of the huge leap that the Canadian population took in 2024. (The Canadian population usually grows by around one percent or less each year, but from 2021 to 2024 there was a massive flood of immigrants).
Canadian Population Growth
| 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | |

| Percent pop growth | 1.1% | 1.2% | 1.4% | 1.5% | 1.1% | .56% | 1.8% | 3.0% | 3.01% |
Immigrant Share of Pop Growth
| 2019/2020 | 2020/2021 | 2021/2022 | 2022/2023 | 2023/2024 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net births - deaths | 74,125 | 55,266 | 41,398 | 14,000 | 15,292 |
| Immigrants | 284,153 | 226,314 | 493,236 | 468,913 | 464,265 |
| Annual change | 358,279 | 281,580 | 534,634 | 482,913 | 479,557 |
Don’t be fooled
The 1% decrease in violent crime rates that StatsCan’s reported for 2024 is the result of the 3% increase in total population overwhelming the 2% increase in the number of violent crimes that same year.
| 2023 | 2024 | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Violent crimes | 577,920 | 591,856 | 2% |
| Canadian population | 40,083,484 | 41,288,599 | 3% |
| Violent crime index | 100.9 | 99.9 | -1% |
Violent crime has not decreased. Don’t be fooled. The problem is that easy bail terms release violent offenders early, not guns in the hands of responsible civilians. Not Trump’s boasts.
